A) Click Turn_on_thumbnail_previews_in_explorer.zip , to download BAT file and go to step 4 below.

3. Disable the preview in Windows Explorer thumbnails

A) Click Turn_off_thumbnail_previews_in_explorer.zip , to download BAT file and go to step 4 below.

4. Save and extract the .bat file.

5. Run the .bat file.

6. You will notice the screen flicker, quickly open a command window and close after the restart Explorer to apply the registry change.

7. Upon completion, you can delete the downloaded .bat-file if you want.

Method 4: Enable or disable the preview thumbnails in the file browser in Windows 10 by using Group Policy.

Note: You must have administrator rights.

This setting affects all users and overrides the previous installation methods 1, 2, 3 .

Setting is not available in the editor Windows 10 Home, as the Local Group Policy Editor is only available in versions of Windows 10, Pro, Enterprise and Education.

1. Open the Group Policy Editor .

2. In the left pane of the Local Group Policy Editor pereydite- "User Configuration", "Administrative Templates", "the Windows Components", "Explorer" . (see. screenshot below)

3. Open the panel on the right policy "Explorer" , and change the policy setting "Disable thumbnail display to show only icons."

5. To enable the preview thumbnails in the file browser

A) Select "Not configured" or "Disabled" and click "the OK" .

B) Now users can enable / disable the preview thumbnails, using methods 1, 2, 3 .

6. Disable the preview thumbnails in the file browser.

A) Select "Enable" and click "the OK" .

Method 5: Enable or disable the preview thumbnails in the file browser in Windows 10 using a REG file

Note: You must have Administrator rights.

This option does the same as the method 4, but only applies to the current user.

This method will override the previous settings in the methods 1, 2, 3 .

Using the reg file below, add and edit the DWORD value in the registry key:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Explorer

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Explorer

DisableThumbnails DWORD

  • 0 or delete = Enabled
  • 1 = Disabled

2. Enable preview thumbnails in File Explorer for all users.

Note: This is the default.

A) Click Enable_Thumbnails_for_All_Users.zip , to download the reg file, and proceed to step 4 below.

3. Disable the preview thumbnails in the file browser for all users.

A) Click Disable_Thumbnails_for_All_Users.zip , to download the reg file, and proceed to step 4 below.

4. Save the .reg file to your desktop and unzip the file.

5. Double click / tap the downloaded .reg file.

6. Press to confirm the merger when prompted.

7. Exit and log on or restart the computer.

8. Now you can delete the downloaded .reg-file if you want.

9. If enabled, users will now be able to enable / disable the preview thumbnails, using methods 1, 2, 3 .
